@Jjj: oh that would be great. That long flight is a waste of time but no way to get around it.

@donjoan: that sounds relaxing. My place for that is Hilton Head
Anywhere in the world on a cruise ship. That's my happy place. After over 70+ cruises that's something I never get tired of

That's a pretty tough question to answer. If your starting out the first couple of cruise should be Caribbean or Alaska just to see if the sea doesn't bother you and you don't get sea sick. There is no city in the world that compares to Dubai. Each area of the world has its own charm. I've done anywhere from 7 days to 111 days. My minimum now is 10 days and it's not worth going long distances for 7 day cruises. That's what I didn't like about river cruising. Flying so far for 8 days. Also if you're still working it takes 3 days to just unwind. My advice after those places to start and to save money star with Galveston then no costly air. I would also try to stick with one cruise company so you start getting perks like free laundry etc. my most cruises are on Princess but I have elite status on Royal, Celebrity and Oceania. If you have more specific questions ide be happy to answer

@Arnie: we have done Caribbean twice and I'm done with that. Would love to do Alaska. We are doing a trip to Italy next year. Cute the plan is all on land. But I just saw an advertisement from Viking for an 8 day cruise and all the stops include where we want to go. But not sure if this is a cruise vacation. Not sure we want to be on ship time.

Rome has a lot to offer. If you were to cruise pick one that starts or ends in Rome so you can stay a few days.

@KiNg: this cruise starts in Rome and ends in Venice. The thought is get there a couple days early to do the big Rome things, Vatican City and the Colosium. After Venice takes flight to Madrid. Spend a day there then home. I think it is perfect except Naples. Wonder if that shoukd be a couple days but the ship is only there one day.

If you have never been to Rome definitely stay a few days as there are tons to see and the sites are breathtaking. Check tickets to Sistine Chapel. Italy is overflowing with tourists year round and Sistine Chapel is a mad house every day. If you can go with the ships pre-boarding excursion it may be worthwhile. Or join a guided tour as tour groups have early hour access or less waiting in line. Venice can be done in a day but I would stay 2 nights so as not to be too much of a rush. No Florence? I missed the Statue of David. I have seen it before but was there last December right around Christmas and the holiday schedule of the Academia museum was limited and I couldn't fit the run there.

Wow sounds fun! I have never been on a cruise. Which trip was your favorite?
